Self Evaluation

Evaluate your self to determine not only doing what you do best, but also to determine your personalities, talents and preferences. In this way you will be able to identify what will make you happy, as well as what you will excel in. Keep these considerations in mind as you sift through information before you make your final decision.

The following points serve as a guideline to get you started. You might be able to come up with other factors after thorough self evaluation.

  • What interests you? Think of the things that you enjoy doing, for instance:
    • Your hobbies and pastimes
    • Your favorite TV programs
    • The books you like to read
    • The courses you enjoyed most in school
    • Your other interests
    • The kind of career you would enjoy doing
  • What are you good at? Think about such things as
    • Your SAT scores
    • Others’ opinions of your abilities
    • Any awards or certificates of excellence you may have received
    • Your natural talents
  • What do you believe in? Think about the values that guide your daily life:
    • Your religious, spiritual, philosophical, moral or ethical beliefs
    • Your political standing
    • Your belief in the value of social workreceived
    • The importance of money in your life
    • The importance you attach to family
    • Other things that you hold important
    • The course of action you would take if your chosen major or career did not align with your value system.
  • What is your personality like? Assess your personality using considerations such as the following:
    • Whether you are an extrovert or introvert
    • Whether or not you seek excitement
    • How do you react to new experiences
    • Your commitment towards meeting deadlines
    • Your attitude towards your work
    • Your decision making abilities
    • Your people skills
  • Finally, consider your motivations: Why are you pursuing a major? Think about what factors are influencing your decisions, and what you hope to gain from it, financially as well as emotionally.
