Factors to Consider when Choosing a Major

All too often, students jump into the choice of a major without planning it out properly and without realizing that this decision may influence the rest of their life. There are several factors that you as a student need to consider before you finally settle on a major to pursue in college:

  • What are you truly passionate about? All too often students make the mistake of selecting a major based upon the observations or opinions of family or friends. They do not consider whether they themselves are interested in the career path their family or friends have chalked out for them. They also do not consider whether or not their chosen major ties in with their career goals and what they want to do in life.
  • What job opportunities as possible? It is not sufficient to simply settle on something you are interested in. Factors such as salary potentials and possible job opportunities should not be disregarded. Students with “creative” talents might be interested in music, but if no earning potential exists in playing in a band, pursing music as a major would not be a good idea.
  • In which schools is this particular major offered, how can they be reached and how much will it cost?If the major you have settled on is located in an unfavorable geographic location, you need to consider whether you are able and willing to relocate or not. If you do not want to relocate, you might have to reconsider your major if schools in your locality do not offer it. If you ultimately decide to relocate, you need to decide whether you can afford to undertake the move, and if you will be able to afford the accommodation in the new locality.
  • What are you good at? There are some areas of your life in which you may be successful, which may turn out to be totally unrelated to your interests and passions. Analyze your strengths thoroughly and determine what you are really good at and what you cannot handle. If you pursue a major that you find difficult, you are not likely to excel in your chosen path.
