The term "theology" literally means the study of God, derived from the Greek word Theos, meaning "God" and the suffix-ology from the Greek word for logos (in this context) "discourse," "theory" or "reasoning". Augustine of Hippo defined Latin equivalent, Theologia, as the argument or discussion of the Deity, Richard Hooker defined "theology" in English as "the science of things divine." In more general terms, that is the study of religious faith, practice and experience, or spirituality. Theologians use various forms of analysis and argument (philosophical, ethnographic, historical, spiritual, and others) to help understand, explain, test, critique, defend and promote any of the many religious themes. This can be taken to help the theologian * Understand rather his or her own religious tradition, * Understand the rather different religious traditions * Make comparisons between religious traditions, * Protect or justify religious traditions, * Promoting Reform particular traditions, * Assisting in the dissemination of religious traditions, or * Build on the resources of a tradition to address some of the current situation or need. |
