The humanities are academic disciplines which study the human condition, using methods that are largely analytic, critical, or speculative, in contrast to the mainly empirical approaches of natural and social sciences.
Examples of disciplines humanitarian ancient and modern languages, literature, law, history, philosophy, religion, visual and performing arts (including music). Additional subjects sometimes included in the field of humanitarian technologies are anthropology, area studies, communication studies, cultural studies, linguistics, and, although they are often viewed as the social sciences. Scientists working in the humanities are sometimes described as "humanists. However, the term also describes the philosophical position of humanism, which some "antihumanist" scholars in the humanities reject.
