How to utilize online social networks effectively

Few months back I came across my high-school teacher on Twitter. I was bewildered. My teacher, who was a geriatric when I was in school, is using social networking websites?!? It was a big reality check, and dawning of an amazing fact-everyone is using social networking websites!

And that includes your potential employer as well. There has been talk of companies using online search engines to find competent employees, and networking websites are the first stop they come across. So, don’t let go of this potent job-search tool go unexploited.

The first thing you need to understand is the need for a consistent, focused strategy. Make sure all your online profiles have the same professional bio-data, picture, user name and personal statement defining you and what you are looking for. It should have a professional outlook, and many features available on such sites will come in handy. Customize your profile as much as possible, and try keeping your choices specific. Frivolous, childish websites or uploading preposterous links is to be avoided at all costs.

The purpose of your presence is to socialize, so do it, but wisely. Besides your friends, family and co-workers, try to interact with people from same profession through forums and groups. And talk only what you know about. Don’t brag or add baseless information, as it will bring up questions against your credentials. Update your input regularly to keep your audience interested.

Once you have the presence and audience, the next and most important step is to let them know what you are looking for. Instead of saying it out loud, drop subtle hints through you’re your career plans and job details. This will call attention to your availability.

Lastly, in case you stumble across an opportunity that is not for you, pass it on. This is one golden way to network!
