How to sell yourself

While searching for a job, you are actually looking for a buyer for your skills and expertise; therefore you need to take a selling approach. You don’t have to be a sales person, but a page off from sales’ book can do your search wonders. Now imagine a sales person, or think of the last sales man you came across. What did they do: search, get in touch and follow up.

Search
Before you go looking for a job, look within yourself and identify your talents-and not just any talents but the ones that give you an edge over other applicants. Recognize what you can offer to a prospective employer and what are you looking for from him as well. Once you are done with it, reshape your resume. Customize it according to the particular job that you are looking for-it should leave an impression.

Get in Touch
How will you initiate the contact? This is a very crucial step. Don’t mass email your resume. Consider and contact each prospect individually and contact on one-on-one basis. Communicate that you respect and value the organization and appreciate their attention.

Pursue
A sales person always follows up. No matter how many times you make an excuse for not buying their product, they will come up with another, more alluring way to making a sale on you. You do this too. Plan an appropriate and tactful follow-up schedule after every interview to keep the communication going.

This is one of the few simple ways that you can get an edge over other candidates and will ensure you land the right job shortly.
