Hiring Tricks
For every job posting that appears in the paper, at least a thousand people apply for it. Many of them stand at the same level, and choosing one becomes one big task as when a person appears for an interview, he is on his best behavior. It is next to impossible to see beyond the façade if a recruiter only considers the person. Therefore, HR managers go beyond the person to make a calculated choice. They observe his presence and the complete package he offers. Following is the list of few unusual pointers a recruiter might mark you for, and for which you need to be prepared:
- Many a times, you are made to wait before you are called in for the interview. This innocent coincidence is not necessarily a coincident as a recruiter might want to keep a watch on your behavior while you wait. An impatient person is easy to judge and a wise choice if rejected. Also, they see how productively you use your time. If you play games on your cell phone or listen to songs, it doesn’t make a very good impression. Instead, if you chose not to sit quietly and wait for the call, do something impressive like review your resume or read a journal placed on a table near you.
- They make friendly conversation after the formal interview, and during that, they will make a comment on one of the hiring personnel and expect you to make a comment. DON’T! Whether you agree or disagree, it will be marked against you. The sensible thing to do is refuse to comment, feign ignorance and state politely that anyone’s personal business is of no concern to you. No matter how much you want to gossip, don’t!
- Clean your car thoroughly before coming over as while the HR manager will be evaluating you, the receptionist will be evaluating your car. They will look for how neat and maintained your car is, and if there are any wrappers or clutter around. This will give them a valuable insight to your personality.
- What you eat is what you are. Add how you eat to this statement and it makes another judgment tool that many recruiters use. They offer you a snack or schedule a lunch interview and then judge you on your eating habits and manners. So you don’t have to turn down food, just keep a check on your manners
