How to Get Noticed at Work
If you are concerned about protecting your job, it is essential for you to take steps to get yourself noticed, so that employers believe that you are indispensible. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, which will increase your worth as perceived by the company:
- Maintain positive relationships with your co-workers. You never know which employee will take out their grudges against you when they see their own job in jeopardy. Stay away from office politics as much as possible and avoid gossip
- Get your work noticed, appreciated and valued. Make sure that your efforts get noticed, and do not be ashamed to highlight the contributions you have made. Periodically, remind your managers of the successful initiatives you have taken during the course of your career. Remember to put all your communications in writing and provide your manager with a copy of every letter or email that you send, so that he or she remembers you, and so that others cannot take credit for what you have done.
- Enhance your visibility. Demonstrate initiative by taking on extra projects or assignments that allow you to exhibit a wide variety of skills, or that will equip you with additional skills. Attend corporate functions, company-sponsored events or even departmental outings, and make it a point to talk to people at these gatherings. This ensures that you will not remain a “nobody” within the organization.
- Keep up-to-date. Keep up-to-date with the latest news and updates in the field, so that the company considers you as an asset. Take advantage of the training, learning and development opportunities offered by your employer and make sure that your company is aware of any training courses or workshops you may have attended from external sources. Obtain the necessary qualifications and certifications which will give you an edge and keep your employer informed.
