Why an MSN?

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is an advanced degree program which allows nurses to specialize in a particular area of expertise.

Who Is Eligible for a Master of Science in Nursing?

Typically only those students who already possess a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) are eligible for an MSN. However, some schools will allow nurses to pursue a BSN and an MSN together. Another option for students is a joint degree in nursing and a related field.

What Careers are Possible with an MSN?
Advanced careers in nursing practice include:

  • Nurse Practitioners who are involved in conducting examinations, diagnosis of acute illnesses and injuries, and prescription of medications.
  • Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), who concentrate on specific medical areas including pediatrics, cardiac management, and oncology
  • Certified Nurse-Midwives who are involved in prenatal and gynecological healthcare and provide consultation to pregnant women as well as deliver babies, and provide postnatal attention.
  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) who administer anesthetics.

How can an MSN prove helpful?
MSN programs typically involve 18 to 24 months of study for full time programs. Many practicing nurses are opting for online MSN degree programs so that they can pursue their degree from the best colleges anywhere in the world while at the same time continuing with their careers. The effort involved in pursuing an MSN typically pays off: The National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice has estimated increases in annual salaries by up to $12,000 for nurses with an MSN.
