US Financial Aid
There was a time when parents used to dish out all their life savings and trust funds to accommodate their child’s college education and related expenses, but with increasing cost of living and hiking college degree costs, these funds are just not enough. Many of the students rely on external funds to take off some of their financial burden, and if you plan to make use of the available options, you need to first accustom yourself with the accessible alternatives:
- College Scholarship:
It is awarded on the basis of varying criteria and does not need to be paid back. It could be an award for academic distinction, verified talent, race, religion, group association or on the basis of need.
- Student Grants: they are more often than not awarded on the basis of need to the student by the government and do not need to be paid back.
- Student Loans: it is the basic form of loan that carries a specific interest rate and needs to be repaid in the time specified. It could be provided by the government, a bank or credit union.
- Internships: Short term work experiences that can either be paid or unpaid. Many organizations offer stipend for internship and some provide college credits that can be used to swap course tuition fee. Although it is uncommon, some organizations offer both.
- Work Study: it is usually offered to people with adequate financial need and incorporates an opportunity for students to work in campus based programs at a government subsidized wage.
- Alternative Methods: there are other ways like social projects or community services that provide certain relief package for college education. Also, an additional option for military personnel or anyone who has served military in GI Bills. They provide college education against your services and at times are accompanied with monetary remuneration as well.
Another important consideration that you need to keep in mind is that many a times students assume that they are not eligible for financial aid as they do not belong to the lowest income group or have never aced their exam. What students need to keep in mind is that the criteria is not only educational excellence or need, it could also be a talent or skill that could get you the required resources to pursue your college degree.
