When will I land my dream job?

People often do not realize that the process of landing their dream job may not turn to be a one-time event. Rather, it is more realistic to believe that this is an on-going process, which may well take the rest of their life. Some people are lucky enough to land their dream job immediately. Some may take a few months and still others may take a few years. No matter how long it takes for you, the most important thing to remember is that “nothing in this world is ever constant”. Change is an immutable fact of life. People change, the economic environment changes, businesses change – and even your skill set might change. If you do not have your dream job now, it might be possible that circumstances may change, and you will get closer to it. Or, if you are lucky enough to be working in your dream job, your circumstances may change, and there is no guarantee that you will continue working in it.

What you need to do is periodically visit and re-visit your career assessment, so that you update your understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses. As time passes, your strengths may change, and you may need to re-align your work duties to your updated strengths. You will also need to look at what other jobs, both within and outside the organization, may suit you. This is the true secret of landing, and then keeping, a dream job: Revisit your skills and strengths, and then keep aligning and re-aligning it with your career assessment. In short, job alignment is not a one-off event that you only need to perform once in your life. It is a skill you need to develop and re-use for the rest of your life.
