Best Jobs for Rapid Growth

As the economy shrinks, job hunters are looking for jobs which not only pay well, but which will also be around for at least some time. A rule of thumb for such careers is simply this: They are those careers in which employers are offering good money for skilled people that they are unable to find.

Typical examples include:

  1. Physician's assistant. People continue to require medical attention and care, ensuring a strong demand for careers in healthcare. While a degree in medicine typically takes seven years, physician’s assistants only need to complete two years of college course work and are required to pass a certification exam.

  2. Database administrator. Companies still continue to have data management needs and require experts to organize and store this data. Database administrators usually only require a two-year degree, along with some expertise in computer programming.

  3. Video game designers. The field of gaming is growing tremendously with the proliferation of PDAs, mobile phones and even iPods that include games. No formal education is usually necessary and video game designers can get by with the skills they have developed themselves provided they have sufficient creativity.

  4. Plumbers. No matter how much people would like to cut costs, plumbing is one thing most cannot manage very well on their own. They prefer to pay plumbers to do the job for them, which explains why the profession pays so well. The best option is an apprenticeship program which will allow you to earn while you are still training.

  5. Graphic and Web designers. As businesses move online and online businesses spring up, there is a great demand for graphic and Web designers who can design websites that can increase customer traffic. Graphic designers are usually self-employed and may either complete short courses or degree programs or be self-taught.
