Job fairs

I have heard a lot about trade fairs and after being unemployed for last seven weeks; I am trying out anything and everything I come across. Should I attend these fairs? What should I expect and be prepared for?

Job fairs are usually organized to allow graduating students to meet potential employers and are the most reliable source of information available about employers, working life and general information. And if you get a chance to attend one, you surely should! Companies send their HR officers to these fairs and they are open to the option of employing the deserving candidates. So keep the following in mind:

  • Take them seriously if you are looking for employment
  • Dress for the event-as if it were an interview
  • Try to engage the recruiter is a meaningful conversation, with sensible questions about the jobs being offered, etc. Vague question will not help you make a good impression.
  • Even if you cannot interest a recruiter in your profile, the information that you’ll collect will be valuable. It will give you a fair idea about what recruiters are looking for, trends, remuneration and benefits, etc.
  • Remember that you are there to sell yourself, so be on your best behavior-pre register for the event, research the companies you are interested in, commercialize yourself, personalize a conversation professionally, etc

You are there to make an impression, so work on it. Also, don’t confuse trade fair with job fairs-many do. Trade fairs are an opportunity for companies to market themselves whereas at job fairs, you can market yourself and avail the employment offers. It’s as good as an interview-so go for it!
