Career vs Money
I am currently working full-time as a high school teacher and this is my first job after college. I earn $30,000 per annum and my spouse is studying, so I am responsible to make ends meet. It is getting tougher by the minute to do so and borrowing money kills my self-esteem. A relative offered me a job recently that pays double of what I am earning but the job is more medicine related-in a pharmacy that he runs.
I can’t decide if I should take it or no. I don’t want my already devoid-of-experience resume to look any more incompetent. What should I do?
This is a problem that many people face when starting a career. There is a misconception about how one should choose any specific job and if it is right for them or no. Firstly, you did not mention your majors of college education, so I am assuming it has something to do with teaching. In your case, it might be fulfilling in terms of job-satisfaction but it has you worried due to financial constraints.
Switching to a different job is not professional suicide as many assume, in fact it’s rather opposite. Your diverse experience will benefit you in the long run. In case you continue to teach, you will end up taking a part time job that will not only pay meager salary but also will not enhance your career exponentially. Soon your work quality will also speak of your worries, and that will not do well for you in any way.
So take the plunge. You will learn a lot, you’ll be able to rein your financial troubles, and you always have the option of going back to teaching once your spouse is done with education.
